A 10-week program of weekly
45-minute classes for hearing infants and
toddlers. Parent participation required.
Tuition:
$110 Materials: $60
During the first five
weeks, playtime and everyday items around the house—such
as a ball, bubbles, and family members—are learning
themes in this introduction to American Sign Language
for a child and caregiver. Experienced signers will
benefit from the session's four, research-proven
strategies shown to speed language development in
hearing children, developed by the child development and
sign language experts Signing Smart(tm).
The last five weeks of
class introduces more signs using animals and toys
as a
learning theme, and delves into a
deeper understanding of the Four Keys to Signing Smart introduced
during Session A. With the home materials, you'll easily
incorporate sign language into your daily routines, favorite nursery rhymes,
and stories. Home
Materials
: A DVD visual dictionary showing
parents and children making over 60 signs;
pocket-sized flashcards of the pictures and the
words of the signs; a DVD titled
The Treasure
Chest: Signs, Songs, and Rhymes,
featuring mini-music videos of children singing
well-loved songs using the signs, as well as showing the
printed word across the bottom of the screen—giving your
child multiple ways to learn the words, the sign, and
the language.

A 14-week semester, meeting weekly
for 1 hour. Parents participate
in the last 15 minutes of class.
Tuition:
$175
Materials:
$87 - Semester 1 and returning Semester 3 students
$37
- Sibling packs for younger siblings of former students
$20 - Additional for new students in Semester 3
In
an environment that encourages exploration and creativity,
children begin learning to read and write music. The
"capstone" of Kindermusik, this 2-year sequential course
prepares the student to continue in private music study.
Students are strongly encouraged to complete both years
in order to gain the most out of the curriculum and
the home materials.
Young
Child Semester 1 Group songs and games are designed
to introduce music reading skills, while rhythmic notation and
melodic contour are the primary focus. Children become
familiar with songs that they will be later playing on
the glockenspiel, while simultaneously delving into a deeper understanding
of musical concepts such as tempo and timbre.
In this first semester, children
are introduced to the percussion
and brass families of the orchestra. This
music appreciation continues in the second
semester with the string and woodwind
families.
Young
Child Semester 3 The children review
musical concepts and notation from the first two
semesters while learning to play a mountain dulcimer, a
3-string instrument. Through dulcimer play, your child
develops an appreciation of string instruments, and
gains an understanding of both strumming chords and
picking out melodies. Rhythmic notation is
expanded and meter is introduced. With a
special emphasis on North American folk music,
your child will learn to improvise and write music, as
well as experience the folk music traditions of the
Appalachian, African-American, and Native American
cultures.
